Defending Independent Military Journalism: Why Stars and Stripes Matters

As combat veterans, service members, and military families, the Veterans & Military Families Council recognizes a fundamental truth: trust matters. For generations of troops, that trust has included the independent reporting of Stars and Stripes.

Recent reporting from NPR detailing new Pentagon efforts to tighten control over Stars and Stripes – after dismissing it as “woke” – raises serious concerns for those who have served and those who continue to serve. These changes are not about strengthening readiness; they represent an attempt to exert greater control over information, narrative, and ultimately the truth available to service members.

Stars and Stripes is not – and must never become – a mouthpiece for the U.S. Department of Defense. Its independence exists by design, protected by Congress to ensure that those in uniform have access to credible, unfiltered journalism. Service members rely on it not only for news, but for critical reporting on pay, benefits, healthcare, housing, and leadership decisions that directly affect their daily lives.

Access to honest, unvarnished information is essential to leadership, readiness, and trust within the ranks. Efforts to sanitize or shape that information risk undermining the cohesion and confidence that military effectiveness depends upon.

Attempts to reshape military journalism to align with political narratives are misguided and dangerous. Service members should not be subjected to curated information designed to reinforce leadership messaging. A strong and resilient force depends on being informed – not managed.

For decades, Stars and Stripes has fulfilled a vital role by reporting on difficult and sometimes uncomfortable issues, including deficiencies in housing, healthcare, and veteran support systems. That reporting has strengthened the military by promoting accountability, not weakened it. Transparency is not a threat to readiness; it is a cornerstone of it.

The Veterans & Military Families Council reaffirms its support for preserving the editorial independence of Stars and Stripes and calls on leaders to reject any effort to politicize military journalism.

Those who serve the nation deserve access to the truth – not filtered messaging.

Because strong institutions are built not on control, but on trust.
